The Ball Bar (Dumbbell)
Stand: The Ball Bar (Dumbbell) Stand is a rugged easy to use
device. It rigidly holds the Ball Bar (Dumbbell) for
fast accurate Coordinate Measuring Machine evaluation.
The base is cast iron and it weighs 25 pounds (11.34
kg). The vertical post is 2 inches in diameter. The
Collar wraps around the post and the Ball Bar
(Dumbbell) Clamp attaches to it. The stand also
includes a hold down device for tying it to the C. M.
M. table.

Ball Gages are manufactured
in a wide variety of designs for all inspection
applications. Some are as simple as a loose ball, and
others are balls mounted on stems. Go and No-Go ball
gages are made to order in any size, with or without
handles.
For pricing and details please see: Ball Gage Catalog
Balls for Ball Sizing is the
process of forcing an oversized ball through the inside
diameter of a metal part. It will increase the inside
diameter and greatly improve the surface texture of the
part. It is commonly used to assure an inside diameter size
in elbows of tubing.
See: Report on Ball
Sizing
See: Sapphire Oil
Balwands consist of a ball with
a flatted area, mounted on a shaft. They are used to
measure the distance or gap between two surfaces. They
are excellent for measuring the flatness of large
parts. Two Balwands of the proper diameters
create a go and no-go situation.
See: Tech Data Sheet: #17 & Ball Gage Catalog.
The Big One is a giant 2 inch
diameter target sphere used for probe
characterization and to evaluate the performance
of C. M. M. or C. N. C. Machining Centers.
See: Tech Data Sheet CNC-1
The Bluing Masteris
used for checking spherical and toroidal
surfaces. This is usually a textured ball on a
Stem. The ball contact with the test part is
shown by a thin coating of oil base Prussian Blue
applied to the ball.

The Cantilever Ball Bar
(Dumbbell) is the
most advanced Ball Bar (Dumbbell) designed. It has
two additional spheres located just behind each
master sphere. This second set of spheres are used as
a means to rigidly support the Ball Bar (Dumbbell)
near the ends. This support virtually eliminates any
bending due to the contact force of the measuring
probe. The Cantilevered Ball Bar (Dumbbell) is used
with the Way Out Ball Bar (Dumbbell) Support.

Probe Characterizing Spheres are used to
evaluate and determine compensation needed for
errors in C.M.M. measuring probes. Most errors
and problems on C.M.M.'s are in the probe. This
should be the first measuring device purchased to
check the C.M.M.
See: Technical
Data Sheet: CMM-7.
The Quick Grip Stand is used to reduce the
Ball Bar (Dumbbell) positioning time and the
number of measurements required while providing
rigid kinematic support of the Ultra Precise Ball
Bar (Dumbbell) during evaluation of Coordinate
Measuring Machines. Includes a Freestanding
Stand, Quick Grip Collar, Two Ball Kinematic
Mount and Three Ball Kinematic Mount.
See: Tech Data Sheet:

Sphericity - Measuring the roundness of a
ball is no problem using the Talyrond system. This
system is our fastest and most accurate method of
measuring roundness. The ball being inspected
remains at rest on the table while the test probe
is rotated accurately around it. A permanent polar
chart recording is produced. The overall accuracy
of this machine is one millionth of an inch. The
calibration is verified by standards traceable to
the National
Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST).
See: Technical Data

The Standard Ball Bar (Dumbbell) is a gage
device which is used to evaluate the overall
performance of Coordinate Measuring Machines. The
Ball Bar consists of two very precise spheres firmly
attached to opposite ends of a rather long rigid bar.
1 inch (25.4 mm) balls are Hardened Stainless Steel,
58RC. They are matched in size and spherical within 5
microinches (127 nm). Available in many different
lengths. Most commonly used with the standard Ball
Bar (Dumbbell) Stand or as part of the Ball Bar
(Dumbbell) Kit.
See: Tech Data Sheet
CMM-1 Page 1& 2.
We carry a large inventory of standard English and
metric ball sizes. This inventory includes Chrome
Steel, Hard 440c Stainless Steel, Soft 302 &
316 Stainless Steel, Brass, Aluminum and Soft
Carbon Steel. We carry glass from one millimeter to
ten millimeters. In addition we stock plastic balls
in Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Nylon, and PTFE.
Any other materials are custom made to your
requirements
See: Tech Data Sheets 1-15.
Standard Extensions raise and extend C. M.
M. Probe Characterizing and C. N. C. Target
Spheres. They are also used to securely couple
measuring devices to the C. M. M. or C. N. C.
table.
See: Technical Data Sheet
CMM-12
The Tri-mount Collar is used to hold three or
more separate Ball Bars (Dumbbells) all at the same
time, on the anchor or the Heavy Duty Stand. No hand
contact with the Ball Bars (Dumbbells) by the
calibration technician is required, and three
different positions can be set at once. This is
important because the Ball Bars (Dumbbells) are
rather long devices which may be sensitive to
temperature change.
See: Technical Data
Sheet CMM-13 Page 1
The Three Ball Kinematic Platform is used to
create a microinch accurate reference datum for the
Ultra Precise Ball Bar (Dumbbell). The Ball Bar
(Dumbbell) Sphere is cradled between three balls.
This is used as part of the Quick Grip Stand System.
When the Ball Bar (Dumbbell) position is changed this
Kinematic support will remain in the same
position.
See: Three Ball Kinematic Mount.

3B-KM | THREE BALL KINEMATIC PLATFORM, 4" | $215.00 |
The Two Ball Kinematic Coupling is a super
rigid holding device used to support The Ultra
Precise Ball Bar (Dumbbell) on its cylinder. It
eliminates deflection errors caused by the contact
force of the probe, while measuring. It is used with
the Ultra Precise Ball Bar (Dumbbell) and the Quick
Grip System.
See: Tech Data Sheet:
CMM-3.
The Ultra Precise Ball Bar (Dumbbell) has
spheres that are round within 2.5 microinches (63.5
nm) and just behind these balls are special cylinders
which are straight and round within 2.5 microinches
(63.5 nm). The cylinder is used to kinematically
support the Ball Bar (Dumbbell) near the very ends of
the Bar, which eliminates deflection errors caused by
the contact force of the measuring probe. The 1"
(25.4 mm) balls are Hardened Stainless Steel 58RC.
They are matched in size and spherical within 2.5
microinches (63.5 nm). Most Commonly used with the
Quick Grip Stand with kinematic coupling.
See: Tech Data
Sheet: CMM-5.
The Universal 4" Platform is used to securely
couple a variety of measuring devices, such as Probe
Characterization Spheres, to the C. M. M. and C. N.
C. table.
